How to Write a Book Description That Sells (2026 Guide)

6/1/2026 · 7 min read

Your cover stops the reader; your description closes the sale. Yet most indie authors give it the least time of anything on their book page. A good description can double your conversion rate.

1. Open with a hook

Readers decide within two lines whether to keep reading. Open with something concrete that creates curiosity and promises the genre. Avoid generic statements like 'an amazing journey'.

2. Build tension, never resolve it

Show what your protagonist wants and what stands in the way. Never reveal the ending — the reader should have to buy the book to find out.

3. Make it scannable

  • Use short paragraphs — 1–3 sentences each.
  • Bold the hook lines (Amazon allows basic HTML).
  • Break up text with bullet points or a headline.
  • Keep the whole description under ~200 words for fiction.

4. End with a clear call to action

Close with a short, strong line that confirms the genre promise and pushes the reader toward 'buy now'.

The shortcut
